(Phaseolus vulgaris)

The Broad Windsor is a classic English variety and it is perhaps one of the world’s oldest and most widespread food crop.  It is prized for its large succulent seeds. The plant produces light green pods, each containing 3 to 7 large beans.   Plants can grow as high as 91-122 cm (36-48”) tall with a spread of 45-52 cm (18-20") wide. It is a cool season crop type and will help to fix nitrogen in your soil. Plants will certainly benefit from some support especially when they become laden with thick meaty pods. Superb for making soup or as a cooked vegetable. Fresh or dried, broad beans must be cooked before eating in order to rid them of potentially toxic alkaloids.

Growing Instructions:

Beans Direct sow seeds in early spring or fall, when soil temperatures have reached at least 8°C (46°F). Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds 5-10cm (2-4”) deep, spaced 15-20cm (6-8”) apart in rows spaced 60-90cm (24-36”) apart. Keep soil evenly moist to promote germination. Seeds should sprout in 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to 20-25cm (8-10”) apart when they are 5-10cm (2-4”) tall. Broad beans prefer well-drained soil that is fertile and has a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer before planting and again after the first flowers appear. Broad beans can be harvested when the pods are fully developed, but still young and tender. Harvest regularly to encourage more production. Broad beans typically reach maturity in 90-100 days.
