Approximately 1036 seeds per gram.
Lactuca sativa
Lot# LT28133
This vigorous oak leave heirloom variety has bright burgundy red leaves that are deeply lobed, creating a full rosette with a typical green center. Great for baby leaf salad mixes. Red Salad Bowl is slow to bolt, tender, and mild-tasting. However, once it has bolted (starts to produce a rapidly growing flower stem) the leaves will become bitter.  It is best grown in early spring or late summer and early fall as the cool nights are beneficial for a better harvest.

Planting Instructions:
  • Some lettuce seed types are especially light sensitive and require light to germinate; hence they must be sown just barely below soil surface in full sun.  Direct sow lettuce seeds or start indoors and transplant when the risk of frost has passed.  Work soil loose and sow lettuce seeds 2-3 seeds at 5mm-12mm (¼-½") deep and barely cover with soil medium.   Lettuce seeds will not germinate when soil temperatures exceed 30°C, (87°F) and do best when soil temperatures remain between 15 to 20°C, 59 to 68° F.  Thin to space seedlings to 30cm (12") apart. Space or thin loose leaf varieties to 15cm (6”) apart.  Row spacing for all lettuce types should between 30-45cm (12-18”) apart.  Lettuce can also be sown in blocks or squares as opposed to rows. Harvest leaf lettuce by either pulling the entire plant or by cutting leaves from the main stem at least 2.5 cm (1") above the base - this will allow the plant to sprout new leaves.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked rich, loose well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 6.5-7.0.
  • Planting Depth:  Sow Lettuce seeds at 6mm-12mm (¼-½") deep. Lettuce germination requires sunlight.  Surface sow seeds and barely cover with soil medium.
  • Germination:  7-14 days.
  • Height at Maturity: 15- 30 cm (6" -12") Spread:  30cm (12”) across.
  • Days to Maturity:   45 days for baby leaves.  50 days for maturity for big leaves.
  • Watering:    An inch of water a week ensures good growth, whether vegetables are grown in single or wide rows. The amount of rain that falls during the week affects how much you should water your garden.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Spacing after Thinning:  Thin to one plant every 30cm (12”) apart.  Rows should be 30-45cm (12-18”) apart.
Additional Information
Open pollinated-untreated seeds.  Red Salad is a low maintenance plant and it is great lettuce for beginner gardeners and those that like gardens that don't need much overseeing. The leaves are a good source of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein and vitamin C as well as vitamin K.  Most lettuce types can withstand a light frost.
