The Kentucky Wonder Yellow Wax Pole Bean is a strong, hardy and vigorous climber much like the green snap variety.  It is a very prolific producer of beautiful buttery yellow, round, meaty pods, 18-20 cm (7-8") long. It is a tried and true heirloom variety that is known for producing top quality beans with a distinctive pleasing taste.  These beans are perfect for growing on fences or poles and can reach a height of 1.2-2.4m (4-8 feet) tall. Climbs freely on a vine and produces quickly. Will continue to grow until frost.

Planting Instructions:
  • Direct sow from end of April to June 15th.  The growth requirements for pole beans are mostly the same as bush beans. The main difference is pole beans need to be grown on trellises, open weave fencing, nylon bean netting strung between supports, or on bamboo or pole teepees.  Sow seeds 2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.   Make sure irrigation supplements rainfall during drier weather.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked, rich, loose and well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 5.5-6.8
  • Planting Depth:   2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.
  • Germination:  5-10 days.
  • Height at Maturity:  Plants reach 1.2-2.4m (4-8’) tall. Spread 38-45 cm (15-18”) wide.
  • Days to Maturity:   50- 65 days for green beans.
  • Watering:   Low water requirements at planting- moisten soil for germination, medium at flowering and then heavy through harvest.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Seed Spacing:      2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.
Additional Information
Avoid planting in soil that stays consistently damp or wet.   Beans typically need warm soil of 65°F or higher. Grows best in full sun. Regular harvesting of the young pods will ensure a greater yield. This plant produces a brown seed.
