Phaseolus vulgaris
LOT#BP23215
A stunning and delicious purple pole bean that was discovered in the 1930's in the Ozark Mountains.  Climbing vines grow to 1.8-2.0m (6-7’) tall and they require vertical space to grow. A sturdy fence, poles or trellising will work nicely.  Vines produce massive yields of bright purple, stringless pods that are both sweet and tender.  This pole bean tolerates early plantings in cooler soil.  The entire plant is tinged purple and is quite beautiful with its’ lilac flowers. Beans turn green when cooked.  Left on the vine to ripen, the dry beans can be used make tasty stews and soups.

Planting Instructions:
  • Direct sow from end of April to June 15th.  The growth requirements for pole beans are mostly the same as bush beans. The main difference is pole beans need to be grown on trellises, open weave fencing, nylon bean netting strung between supports or on bamboo or pole teepees.  Sow seeds 2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.   Make sure irrigation supplements rainfall during drier weather.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked, rich, loose and well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 5.5-6.8
  • Planting Depth:   2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.
  • Germination:  5-10 days.
  • Height at Maturity:  Plants reach 1.2-2.1m (4-7’) tall. Spread 38-45 cm (15-18”) wide on a fence or trellis.
  • Days to Maturity:   70-85 days for fresh beans.
  • Watering:   Low water requirements at planting- moisten soil for germination, medium at flowering, and then heavy through harvest.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Seed Spacing:      2-5cm (1-1½") deep, 10-15cm (4-6") apart.
Additional Information:
Avoid planting in soil that stays consistently damp or wet.   Beans typically need warm soil of 65° or higher. Grows best in full sun. Regular harvesting of the young pods will ensure a greater yield.
