Phaseolus vulgaris

This pre-1800 dry 'Heirloom' bean is a great producer of good tasting dry beans with seeds coloured purple to red with white splashes.  The plants are compact and stout that grow to 35-45 cm (14-18”) tall with a spread of 38-51 cm (15-18”) wide. They are considered semi-runners that can withstand colder climates.  They produce an abundant amount of large oval 13-15 cm (5-6") green shell pods.  They mature much earlier than other beans of this type (68 days).  For dry beans allow pods to dry on the vine until pressing the beans with your fingernail leaves no indentation. If maturity for dry seeds is threatened, pull plants by the roots and hang them in a dry place to finish or pick pods, shell and finish drying indoors.

Planting Instructions:
  • Direct sow from end May to June 15th preferably, but can be sown into the beginning of July.  Try to plant during a warm, dry spell.  Soil must be warm. If it is not warm enough, seeds will rot. Beans require a minimum soil temperature of 16°C (60°F) and a maximum of 24°C (75°F). Seeds will not germinate properly if planted too deeply or too early in cold wet ground.  Sow seeds 2.5 cm (1") deep, 5-8 cm (2-3") apart, in rows 45-60 cm (18-24") apart.  Never sow white seeded beans too early.  White bean seeds transmit water too fast, cracking the cotyledons which reduces seed vigor and germination whereas darker coloured bean seeds can regulate water uptake in cool, wet soils, preventing the cracking of the cotyledons.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked rich, loose and well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 5.5-6.8
  • Planting Depth:   2-5 cm (1") deep, 5-8 cm (2-3") apart.
  • Germination:  7-14 days.
  • Height at Maturity:  Plants reach 35-45 cm (14-18”) tall. Compact bush habit. Spread 38-51 cm (15-18” wide.
  • Days to Maturity:    68 days for shell beans and 80-85 days for dry beans.
  • Watering:   Low water requirements at planting- moisten soil for germination, medium at flowering and then heavy through harvest.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Seed Spacing:      5-8 cm (2-3") apart, in rows 45-60 cm (18-24") apart.
Additional Information
Avoid planting in soil that stays consistently damp or wet.   We generally plant 3-4 rows at a time and space out rows at 20-25 cm (8-10”) apart. It is perfect because most people can reach across that width.  You can grow 3-4 times the amount of heirloom beans in the same space, you reduce the amount of area for weeds, and you'll save on water.  It is about 50-60 days for mature beans, 100+ days for dry beans. Beans typically need warm soil of 18°C (65°F) or higher. Grows best in full sun with well watered soil. Regular harvesting of the young pods will ensure a greater yield. Pick frequently for maximum yields, but avoid disturbing foliage in wet weather to prevent spread of fungal diseases. White-seeded beans usually don’t germinate as well as dark-seeded.
