Lot# BE23505
Cylindra Beet dates back to the 1880s. It is also known as the "Formanova", an heirloom beet from Denmark. It is surprisingly sweet for it size. It almost resembles the shape of an oversized carrot and a very thick carrot at that. Cylindra is very nice for slicing and making pickled beets. Roots grow upwards as they grow. It averages 20-23cm (8-9") long with dark red flesh. Plants can reach 40-45cm (16-18”) tall with a spread that is 20-30cm (8-12”) wide. The leaves of this beet are a little sweeter than other beets and can be used as salad greens.

- Direct sow seeds in April to June when soil temperatures have warmed up to at least 10˚C (50˚F). You can soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing as this will aid in germination, or direct sow at a depth of 5-12 mm (¼ - ½”). String a row and etch a furrow about 5 mm (½”) deep with a hoe and sow 15-20 beet seeds per 25 cm (12”). Cover seeds lightly with soil and water lightly, keeping soil moist while seeds are germinating. Space out rows 35-45 cm (14-18”) apart. When beets are about 5 cm (2”) high, thin to one plant every 5-12 cm (2-5”). Weed as required until beets have the advantage.
