Raxe Radish is a large round, red bunching type of radish. This German variety grows to at least 3 times the size of Cherry Belle Radish and they resist becoming fibrous and woody unlike other winter types.  Raxe can be planted from spring to fall without bolting. 
 Planting Instructions:
  • Direct sow Raxe Radish seeds in the garden from March to April or as soon as soil can be worked.  Radishes are a cool-weather crop. Sow radishes in the garden 2 to 3 weeks before average date of the last frost in spring. Sow successive crops every 2 weeks in spring and in autumn. Two or more crops can be grown in spring. Radishes require 22-70 days to come to harvest.  Plant seeds 1 cm (⅜”) deep and 5-10 cm (2-4”) apart.  Radish plants do not do well when they are planted too close together.  You may want to give extra room for the winter varieties. Sow along the row as thinly as possible between thumb and forefinger (mix the seed with dry sand). Cover with 1.25 cm (1/2") soil, press carefully down and sprinkle with water. Plant rows 20 cm (8”) apart.  If you are using a cold frame, start sowing seeds in February.   It's a good idea to sow half a row every couple of weeks to give you a harvest almost throughout the year. 
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked rich, loose well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 6.5-7.5..
  • Planting Depth:  Sow Radish seeds 1.25 cm (½") deep and 5-10 cm (2-4”) inches apart. 
  • Germination:  3-7 days.
  • Height at Maturity: 15-20 cm (6-18") tall.  Spread:  15-23 cm (6-9”) across.
  • Days to Maturity:   25-55 days. 
  • Watering: 2.5 cm (1") of water a week ensures good growth, whether radishes are grown in single or wide rows. The amount of rain that falls during the week affects how much you should water your garden.  Keep radishes moist but not wet. 
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun    
  • Spacing after Thinning:  Thin to one plant every 5-10 cm (2-4”) apart. Rows should be 30-40 cm (12-16”) apart. 
Additional Information
Grow radishes in full sun or partial shade. Plant radish seeds in loose, well-drained soil. Remove soil lumps, rocks, and roots from radish planting beds. Obstructions can cause roots to grow malformed.  Complete the harvest before the weather grows warm. Warm weather can result in small roots. Long days may also cause radishes to flower. Plant radishes during the shorter days of spring and autumn. In mild winter regions, grow radishes in late autumn and early winter. Radishes can withstand frost.  Keep radish planting beds moist but not wet. Even, regular watering will result in quick growth. Radishes that receive too little water will become woody tasting. Prepare planting beds with aged compost.
