Pisum sativum

Strike pea is a standard early garden pea which produces peas earlier at cool temperatures than other types.  Strike produces 6-7.5 cm (2¾”-3”) blunt ended pods with 7-8 medium large dark green peas inside.  The plant’s dark green vines don’t need any type of staking or trellis and, instead, can grow in a bush formation with an average growing height of 56-61 cm (22-24”).  Space rows 30-45 cm (12-18") apart. Do not thin the peas as they emerge from the soil after germination.

Planting Instructions:
  • Direct sow pea seeds in loose, well worked soil, when soil temperature is around 10-20°C (50-70°F).  As a general rule of thumb, we plant about 25 seeds  per 30 cm (12”) and 12-25 mm (½-1") deep.  We typically  plant double rows of peas in our garden.  Stake and string rows as long as you require and cut two 2.5 cm (1”) deep furrows with hoe or rake about 7 cm (3”) apart.  We generally space our double rows 45-60 cm (18-24") apart.  Cover with soil and gently tamp down soil with the tined end of a garden rake along the entire row.  Ensure the soil is reasonably damp to promote germination.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked rich, loose well-drained soil.
  • Planting Depth:   Plant seeds 2.5 cm (1") deep and 1-2 cm (3/8-1/2") apart.
  • Germination:  7-10 days.
  • Height at Maturity: 56-61 cm (22-24”) tall.  Spread:  30 cm (11.7") across.
  • Days to Maturity:   52-57 days.
  • Watering: 2.5 cm (1") of water a week ensures good growth, whether vegetables are grown in single or double rows. The amount of rain that falls during the week affects how much you should water your garden.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Spacing after Thinning:   No thinning required. Plant pea seeds 1-2 seeds per 2.5cm (1”) in double rows.
Additional Information
Open pollinated-untreated seeds. It is a very early season pea that produces abundant amounts of tasty peas that are perfect for eating fresh or freezing.  Strike Peas are an excellent choice for home gardens. Strong, 56-61 cm (22-24”) vines don't need staking.
